Officers, Directors, and CommitteesThe history of Rotary International and of this club
Rotary traces its origin to a meeting on February 23, 1905, when Paul Harris (an attorney), regarded as our founder, met with three other persons (an engineer, a tailor, and a coal dealer) to form a mutually-beneficial organization. From the beginning the club had a unique feature - a classification system limiting membership in a club to no more than two representatives of any business or profession. They rotated meeting in their places of business - hence the name ROTARY.
The Lexington Rotary Club was admitted to membership in Rotary International on February 1, 1922, with 15 members. Our club was sponsored by the Lynchburg, Virginia, Rotary Club. We, in turn, sponsored the Buena Vista (1922), Buchanan (1928), and Lexington Sunrise (1994) Rotary Clubs. Lexington is presently one of 82 clubs in District 7570 extending from Winchester, VA, primarily down the I-81 corridor to Greenville, TN. Two members of the club have served as Governor of the district: R. Tate Alexander (1979-80), and D. Rae Carpenter, Jr. (1997-98).
